Shaping the future of spaces through sustainable concrete designs
Novel Grey is a material-driven design studio that creates handmade 3D wall tiles and custom wall decorations. At the core of the studio’s design practice is the recycling of industrial materials. Founders Marjolein and Jan-Paul Deurloo found a way to reuse industrial concrete waste, reducing up to 76% COâ‚‚ emissions in the production process.

At ROOTS by Simone van Es, Novel Grey presents its work within the theme The Last Supper, From a Different Perspective. Just as Leonardo da Vinci’s famous fresco revolutionized the way we see perspective, ROOTS challenges visitors to rethink materials and sustainability. Novel Grey perfectly aligns with this philosophy: it transforms discarded concrete waste—materials that would otherwise end up as landfill—into striking and innovative designs.

A Circular Production Process
Rubble from old, demolished buildings is carefully collected, crushed, and returned to its original pre-concrete state: gravel, sand, and cement. This circular process gives discarded materials a second life, resulting in high-quality 3D wall decorations. By reusing construction and industrial waste in its concrete mixtures, Novel Grey not only creates a more sustainable product but also introduces a unique and refined aesthetic.

Neuroaesthetics and Biophilic Design
Novel Grey’s designs are inspired by biophilic design and neuroaesthetics. With their organic shapes and muted, natural tones, the tiles evoke a sense of tranquility in any space. The interplay of light and shadow on their textured surfaces creates a dynamic, almost meditative experience, enhancing the user’s overall well-being.

Additionally, Novel Grey presents statement pieces from Chapter 1, a series of luxurious, voluminous tiles that make a bold visual impact. The tiles are versatile, suitable for any surface, and also available as eye-catching standalone wall pieces. For unique projects, Novel Grey offers fully customized designs.
