Very happy with this wonderful article by Viveka van de Vliet Goed Verhaal in the latest edition of Bouwwereld Magazine. Here, you can read about the new fiber crop in the Netherlands, Silphium Perfoliatum (Silphy), and the materials my team and I developed from this plant during the BlueCity (010) Circular Challenge*.
🌱 Silphy has proven to be an excellent non-toxic raw material for bio-based building materials and wood substitutes. At our ROOTS Exhibition** during the Salone del Mobile.Milano, the interest from furniture industry producers was considerable. A chair seat made from 100% plant-based sheet material is an interesting alternative to MDF, especially if it is water-resistant, contains no added binders, and doesn’t warp when exposed to moisture.
Our CO2-negative building block has also attracted the right attention from testers and builders. We are fully developing this new material, as building materials typically have a longer lead time due to certifications. In the meantime, Dutch farmers can start cultivating this versatile and blooming (🌼🐝!) fiber crop, so that next year's raw materials won’t need to come from Germany.
Sustainable agriculture is essential, as the Dutch soil and nature are in poor condition. That’s an understatement—dramatically poor would be more accurate. Our business case supports the value of regenerative farming in the agricultural transition and highlights how innovative applications of Silphy strengthen not only this sustainable chain but also nature.
