The Knitwit Stable

Luxurious AaBee Blanket, a continuance of rich tradition

The Knitwit Stable and The Wassum re-introduce
the AaBe x Knitwit Blanket

The Knitwit Stable proudly presents the updated AaBe x Knitwit blanket, an heirloom that has symbolised warmth, solidity and timelessness in Dutch households since 1929. This sustainable variant, made of wool from Kempische Heideschapen, was unveiled in Eindhoven during Dutch Design Week in October 2024. With this project, we continue the rich tradition of the AaBe blanket, now in a fully traceable and biodegradable version.

Experience the ultimate warmth and softness with this new, sustainable blanket. Wonderful to lay under in bed. This luxurious blanket embraces you with great comfort and offers you a cozy cocoon during the cold days. The wool used for the renewed blanket comes from Kempen Heathsheep, which are essential for the preservation of heathland landscapes in The Netherlands. The grazing of the sheep keeps the heath vital, while the sheep spread seeds and keep the soil healthy. These sheep play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance in valuable nature reserves.

In an authentic factory in Northern Italy, the wool is processed into a blanket in a traditional way. The end product is undyed, in its natural color, and completely biodegradable. At the end of its life, the blanket can be returned to the earth as food for the soil. This makes the AaBe x Knitwit blanket an heirloom that can be passed on for generations, without causing damage to the earth.

The Knitwit Stable

The potential of over eight hundred thousand kilos of shorn wool in the Netherlands is not fully utilised each year. The Knitwit Stable, located on a farm in Baambrugge, is a small-scale production factory and knowledge institute that is committed to the revaluation and sustainable processing of Dutch wool. What started with four animals, grew into a flourishing herd of Angora goats and Merino sheep and an ambitious mission: to produce fair wool products with respect for nature, animals and community that seamlessly combine craftsmanship, tradition and sustainability.

With their own brand, The Knitwit Label, they create sweaters, cardigans, shawls, and accessories made from wool sourced from their own animals. Through this label, they put their philosophy into practice: not only offering insight into how to create a transparent and sustainable product from wool, but also showing how it’s done. In addition to using their own wool, they collect sheep, alpaca, and mohair wool from fellow breeders and Dutch sheep farmers, all of whom they visit personally. Using this sustainably produced wool, they craft stylish, local, sustainable, and transparent products at fair prices. In doing so, they restore the value wool truly deserves: a natural luxury product made with respect for people, animals, and the environment.

The Knitwit Stable is more than a producer of wool products. It is a knowledge institute that is committed to restoring the value of Dutch wool. Inspired by regenerative leadership, the team is working on a bio-circular production chain in which nature, craftsmanship, and sustainability come together. The new AaBe x Knitwit blanket is a powerful example of this.

About Landschapsbeheer De Wassum

De Wassum, a grazing company in Roermond, organizes 20 heath sheep flocks that graze under shepherds' guidance in 27 nature reserves in the South of the Netherlands. They help restore biodiversity by preventing the overgrowth of grass and shrubs, caused by nitrogen deposition. In 32 years, Sjraar van Beek has bred a strong population of Kempische Heideschapen, the wool of which is sold. This breed, once almost extinct in the 1960s, has grown to 15,000 to 20,000 adult ewes thanks to a breeding program. The Knitwit Stable is here with their project, AaBe x Knitwit blanket. With this blanket, they want to show the value of Dutch wool again and have set up a beautiful new value chain.
